{"id":1613,"date":"2026-03-20T08:28:40","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T08:28:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.indopacera.com\/?p=1613"},"modified":"2026-03-24T08:29:28","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T08:29:28","slug":"india-seeking-to-join-european-sixth-generation-fighter-program-reports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indopacera.com\/ro\/2026\/03\/20\/india-seeking-to-join-european-sixth-generation-fighter-program-reports\/","title":{"rendered":"India seeking to join European sixth-generation fighter program: Reports"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indopacera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/resize-e1699611166907-768x432-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.indopacera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/resize-e1699611166907-768x432-1.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.indopacera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/resize-e1699611166907-768x432-1-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.indopacera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/resize-e1699611166907-768x432-1-18x10.webp 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MELBOURNE \u2014 India has expressed an interest in joining one of the two ongoing European sixth-generation fighter programs, according to local media reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reports, which cite a document submitted to the Indian parliament\u2019s Standing Committee on Defence, say the country\u2019s Ministry of Defence told lawmakers&nbsp;that it would \u201ctry to join forces with one of (two) consortia and begin considering a sixth-generation fighter right away with a view to ensure they do not lag behind in achieving the target for advanced aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two consortia are the&nbsp;Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP)&nbsp;by Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom,&nbsp;which aims to develop the Tempest fighter jet and related systems, and the troubled&nbsp;Future Combat Air System (FCAS)&nbsp;effort by France, Germany and Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The standing committee&nbsp;reportedly added&nbsp;that it had recommended the Ministry to develop a trajectory for the planning process in the development and acquisition of such an aircraft \u201cwhich would eventually enhance India\u2019s air domain capabilities in today\u2019s highly air-centric modern warfare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,&nbsp;defense analyst Dan Darling told Breaking Defense&nbsp;that the existing partners of both programs were unlikely to allow India to join to development program, although they would welcome India buying their respective aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It had previously&nbsp;been reported&nbsp;that Japan was reluctant to allow an earlier attempt by Saudi Arabia to join GCAP due to concerns about potential slippage in the already tight timelines for the program, with Japan seeking for its first aircraft to enter service in the early 2030s to replace its Mitsubishi F-2 fighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>RELATED:&nbsp;GCAP 6th-gen fighter project names sensor group, exec doubts changes to \u2018core team\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India has struggled in recent years to modernize its air combat capabilities despite the ongoing purchase of Dassault Rafale fighter jets from France, as its indigenous Tejas program has dogged by development and maturity issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has also plans to develop a fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, although that program is still a long way from taking shape, with a Request for Proposals yet to be issued and the&nbsp;first prototype only expected&nbsp;to rollout in 2031.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MELBOURNE \u2014 India has expressed an interest in joining one of the two ongoing European sixth-generation fighter programs, according to local media reports.
